Canadian filing calendar

The deadlines we keep in view for you.

Most penalties come from a date slipping, not from a hard problem. These are the ones that drive our accounting and tax calendar.

T1 · personalApril 30
Personal income tax return

Self-employed individuals have until June 15 to file, but any balance owing is still due April 30.

T2 · corporate6 months
After fiscal year-end

Corporate return due six months after year-end; the balance is generally due two or three months after year-end.

T4 · payrollLast day of Feb
T4 slips and summary

Slips to employees and the summary to CRA for the previous calendar year, with remittances through the year.

GST / HSTBy period

Your reporting period sets the filing and payment dates. We track yours and prepare the return before it is due.

Dates that fall on a weekend or public holiday move to the next business day. Your exact dates depend on your year-end and reporting period.

FAQ

Starting a business in Canada: the questions we hear most

Short answers. For anything specific to your situation, book a consultation and we will walk through it.

How do I start a business in Canada?

Plan it, choose a structure and a name, register with your province (and federally if you incorporate federally), get a CRA Business Number with GST/HST and payroll accounts, obtain your licences, open a business bank account and set up your books. SZ Business Solution does every step for you, in any province or territory.

Can a newcomer or non-resident start a business in Canada?

Yes, in most provinces. Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and several others have no residency requirement for directors. Whether you can work in the business depends on your immigration status, which a licensed consultant advises on; we handle the registration, bank account, accounting and the business plan.

How much does it cost to start a business in Canada?

Government fees are modest: roughly $60 to $100 to register a business name and about $200 to $450 to incorporate, plus a name search. The rest depends on what you add: business plan, branding, website, bookkeeping. Our guide on costs breaks it down with two sample budgets.

Which province should I start my business in?

Usually the one where you will live and where your customers are. The differences are sales tax (5% in Alberta and the territories, up to 15% in Atlantic Canada), the registry process, director residency rules and the provincial nominee program for entrepreneurs. Our province pages compare them.

Do you write business plans for immigration?

Yes. Plans for the Start-up Visa, provincial nominee entrepreneur streams, Quebec programs, intra-company transfers and C11 work permits, and for US visas such as E-2, L-1 and EB-5, prepared with your licensed immigration representative. We do not provide immigration advice.
