Doing business in New Brunswick

What makes New Brunswick different.

New Brunswick is Canada’s only officially bilingual province and one of the lowest-cost places in the country to open a storefront or a trucking company. Moncton in particular has become a hub for newcomer-owned businesses. Registration goes through Service New Brunswick’s Corporate Registry, with HST as a single 15% tax.

We prepare the NUANS report, the incorporation or business name registration, your CRA Business Number, HST and payroll accounts, and your WorkSafeNB registration. If you are applying through the NBPNP, we write the business plan to the stream’s requirements.

Good to know
  • Corporations and business names are registered through Service New Brunswick; a NUANS report supports a named corporation.
  • HST is 15%, one registration and one return through CRA.
  • Business services and signage can be offered in English, French or both; bilingual marketing opens the whole province.
  • Most employers register with WorkSafeNB within 15 days of hiring.
  • Annual returns are filed with the Corporate Registry each year.

Popular with newcomers here: Trucking and logistics, Restaurants and hospitality, Construction, Convenience and gas retail, Seafood and agri-food, IT services.

Step by step

How to start a business in New Brunswick.

The sequence matters: a bank will not open the account before the registration exists, and CRA cannot issue accounts before the Business Number. We run the steps in order.

01

Plan the business

Confirm the idea, the market and the money. If you are applying through the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP), this is where the business plan is written.

FAQ

Starting a business in New Brunswick: questions we hear most

Short answers. For anything specific to your situation, book a consultation and we will walk through it.

Is New Brunswick a good province for a newcomer to start a business?

It is among the most affordable, with active provincial support through Opportunities NB and an entrepreneur stream in the NBPNP. We help you register, bank and set up books; a licensed consultant handles the immigration side.

How is HST different from GST plus PST?

HST combines both into one 15% tax collected and filed through CRA. You charge one rate and file one return, which simplifies bookkeeping compared with PST provinces.

Can I run my business from Moncton but sell across Canada?

Yes. You charge the sales tax of the province where your customer is located for most goods, which is where our bookkeeping support earns its keep.

What do I need to hire my first employee?

A CRA payroll (RP) account, WorkSafeNB registration, a payroll system and your employee’s TD1 forms. We set all of it up and can run payroll monthly.

Start a business in another province or territory.

Expanding from New Brunswick to a second province? That is an extra-provincial registration; we file it and keep both in good standing.
