Doing business in Yukon

What makes Yukon different.

Yukon has no territorial sales tax, a strong tourism and mining economy centred on Whitehorse, and the Yukon Business Nominee Program for entrepreneurs who invest and operate a business locally. Corporations and business names are registered with Corporate Affairs at Community Services.

We handle the NUANS report, incorporation or business name registration, CRA accounts, Yukon WSCB registration and your YBNP business plan, then run your bookkeeping and payroll remotely so that Dawson City and Watson Lake are as easy to serve as Whitehorse.

Good to know
  • Incorporations and business names are filed with Corporate Affairs; extra-territorial registration applies to companies formed elsewhere.
  • No territorial sales tax; GST at 5% once registered.
  • The Yukon Business Nominee Program requires a business plan, a minimum investment and active management of the business.
  • Employers register with the Yukon Workers’ Safety and Compensation Board.
  • Annual returns are filed with Corporate Affairs each year.

Popular with newcomers here: Tourism and outfitting, Mining and exploration services, Construction, Hospitality and food, Retail, Technology and remote services.

Step by step

How to start a business in Yukon.

The sequence matters: a bank will not open the account before the registration exists, and CRA cannot issue accounts before the Business Number. We run the steps in order.

01

Plan the business

Confirm the idea, the market and the money. If you are applying through the Yukon Nominee Program, this is where the business plan is written.

FAQ

Starting a business in Yukon: questions we hear most

Short answers. For anything specific to your situation, book a consultation and we will walk through it.

How do I start a business in Yukon?

Order a NUANS report, file your incorporation or business name with Corporate Affairs, set up your CRA Business Number and GST and payroll accounts, register with the Yukon WSCB if you hire, and get a City of Whitehorse or municipal licence where required. We complete it all.

What is the Yukon Business Nominee Program?

A territorial pathway for entrepreneurs who invest in and actively manage a Yukon business, first on a work permit and later with nomination. The business plan is central; we prepare it with your consultant.

Is there sales tax in Yukon?

Only the 5% federal GST; there is no territorial sales tax.

Do you serve businesses outside Whitehorse?

Yes. Everything is remote and document-based, so the whole territory receives the same service.

Elsewhere in Canada

Start a business in another province or territory.

Expanding from Yukon to a second province? That is an extra-provincial registration; we file it and keep both in good standing.
